Year 11 Holly wins Gold with the British Nations Cup Team in Wierden
Show jumping star Holly from North Lincolnshire has beaten off tough competition to steer Great Britain to win gold in Wierden. It was a tremendous win by the British Nations Cup team, competing under the title sponsor banner of Team LeMieux in The Netherlands when they claimed the top spot in the Wierden.
At the end of the first round, with all four of the British riders having jumped clear, they sat in joint first place alongside Ireland on a zero-penalty score. This saw the leaders two fences ahead of their closest contenders which came in the form of Italy and Germany with The Netherlands behind them on 12 penalties.
In the second round of the competition the tension was high and it showed with the irish rider having a fence down. Team GB’s next 2 rider went clear leaving it very tight especially given that after of each team had been out to ride, it meant Ireland had a narrow lead. It was down to the last 2 riders of Ireland and GB to go. Ireland were up first and were looking good for a clear but a late mistake left the door open.
For GB this responsibility fell to Holly with Rexter d’Or. As the final rider in the competition the pressure was on and Holly entered the arena knowing that a clear round from her was vital if the team were to win.
In true style, Holly posted yet another foot-perfect clear within the time allowed to finish on zero penalties meaning the Brits took the honours!
Talking afterwards, British Show jumping Youth Team Manager and Chef d’Equipe Clare Whitaker commented “All four members of the team have been great today. We finished the first round with all four having jumped clear then had a further three clear in the second. Holly rode exceptionally well as the final rider for the team and carrying that pressure on her shoulders. It was a great win.”
