Salters’ Institute Festivals of Chemistry

The Salters’ Institute plays a major role in the support of chemistry teaching, the encouragement of young people to pursue careers in the UK chemical industries, and the promotion of chemical education including the whole area of curriculum development.

Eight students were chosen to represent Hull Collegiate School at the Salters’ Institute Festivals of Chemistry on Tuesday 14th May 2019. Only a small number of Year 8 students per year are given this exciting opportunity.

The festivals are one-day fun events held at universities and colleges throughout the UK and Ireland. They provide an opportunity for enthusiastic young students to spend a day in a university/college department and to take part in practical chemistry activities which are fun. Prizes are awarded to the winning teams and all students receive participation certificates and fun prizes.

Two teams of four participated in two chemistry challenges during the day. One ‘Forensic detective’ challenge set by Salters and one technical and analytical challenge set by the University of Hull. Our teams really enjoyed the activities and we had a fantastic result.

Eight teams in total participated and our Hull Collegiate teams achieved a first in the morning competition and second place in the afternoon activity.

So a very big round of applause to:

Team A: Jonty, Jasper, Cristina and Izzy who came first in the Salters’ Forensic Detective Challenge.

Team 1: Christian, Charlie, Ruby and Eloise who came second in the Hull University Analytical Challenge.
